The not-for-profit 51²èÂ¥ (51²èÂ¥) seeks a Managing Editor for 51²èÂ¥ Letters, one of the four journals it owns.

51²èÂ¥ Letters has 55 years of experience in publishing high-quality reviews, and original research articles in all areas of the molecular life sciences. The journal has a very wide readership and is renowned for its quality standards and speed of publication. The journal is led by Editor-in-Chief Michael Brunner of Heidelberg University, Germany.

We seek a Managing Editor for the 51²èÂ¥ Letters editorial office (3 direct reports). Reporting to the 51²èÂ¥ Press Publisher, the Managing Editor will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, editorial board members, and our publishers to uphold high editorial standards and offer excellent service to our authors, referees and readers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Managing the editorial office team
  • Maintaining excellent working relationships with authors, referees and members of the editorial board
  • Overseeing the journal manuscript pipeline and compiling issues
  • Overseeing editorial activities, including pre-screening of submitted manuscripts and quality control of manuscripts accepted for publication
  • Resolving integrity issues related to journal content
  • Developing marketing strategies and material
  • Updating and implementing journal editorial policies
  • Commissioning and editing or writing articles for the Scientists’ Forum
  • Monitoring editorial and journal performance, and preparing regular reports and statistics
  • Organising and attending the annual editorial board meeting
  • Promoting the journal through institute visits and attending conferences, including the annual 51²èÂ¥ Congress

Requirements

This is a dynamic, varied role. A candidate with strong editorial acumen, excellent leadership and communication skills (written and oral), and the enthusiasm and drive to further enhance the journal’s reputation would excel in this position.  A PhD in structural or molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology or a related discipline and a minimum of two years’ editorial experience, with a solid understanding of STM journal processes and production, are essential. Post-doctoral experience is advantageous.

This is a full-time, permanent position. The 51²èÂ¥ Letters Editorial Office is located in Heidelberg, Germany. The majority of 51²èÂ¥ Press staff now work remotely and the candidate can be based in either the UK, Germany or Spain.

Strategic Marketing Manager

Following a strategic review and in support of 51²èÂ¥ Strategic Priorities 2024 – 2028, the position of Strategic Marketing Manager has been created in order to promote the work of 51²èÂ¥, increase the visibility of 51²èÂ¥ events and programs and diversify sources of revenue.
Reporting to the 51²èÂ¥ Secretary General, the Strategic Marketing Manager will work closely with 51²è¥’ Executive Committee members and 51²èÂ¥ senior staff.
This is a new position for 51²èÂ¥ and therefore, there is scope for the successful candidate to develop the role based on their knowledge, experience and ideas, to ensure the successful promotion of 51²èÂ¥ amongst its target audience.

Responsibilities
• Review current promotion marketing and communication activities of 51²èÂ¥, to identify strengths and weaknesses and evaluate operational effectiveness
• Develop, manage and implement a marketing strategy and plan for 51²èÂ¥, which supports its strategic priorities and operational activities
• Develop, manage and implement a unified approach to corporate / industrial sponsorship and advertising, which will generate and diversify revenues for 51²èÂ¥
• Support the promotion and development of 51²èÂ¥ events and associated sponsorship opportunities, in consultation with 51²èÂ¥ core PCO, increasing the visibility, attractiveness, usefulness and, where relevant, income from 51²èÂ¥ events and programmes
• Promote the broad work and activities of the 51²èÂ¥ increasing visibility amongst key audiences
• Manage marketing campaigns which support the strategic objectives of 51²èÂ¥
• Co-ordinate internal and external communication of activities related to marketing campaigns to all relevant stakeholder groups
• Build sustainable relationships and partnerships with other key players such as scientific organizations, biotechnological companies, advertising agencies etc as is necessary to promote 51²èÂ¥ effectively
• Ensure that marketing activities align with 51²èÂ¥ approved strategic plan and action plans and are achieved within agreed timescales.
• Where required, appoint and manage a marketing agency
• Manage the marketing budget efficiently and effectively

Experienced Required
• A relevant university degree or equivalent, preferably in marketing or a closely related field
• Strategic marketing experience, including experience of developing, managing and implementing marketing strategies and plans
• Practical experience and knowledge of managing multiple marketing channels, both on and offline
• Proven experience of managing marketing budgets effectively and efficiently
• Experience of developing and managing sponsorship and advertising agreements, which generate revenue
• A track record of delivering successful marketing campaigns
• Experience of working with and managing support agencies – marketing agency, PR agency etc
• A quantifiable track record of raising the visibility and profile of an organisation, in line with its strategic objectives
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication and presentation skills

Experience Preferred
• Experience of working with / for international non-profit scientific organisations and scientific institutions, or similar
• Science marketing experience would be considered an advantage
• Experience of working with / in a scholarly society, or European membership associations or federation

Notes
This is a full-time, permanent position working remotely from home. The postholder can be based in either the UK, Germany or Spain. The role will require occasional travel to 51²èÂ¥ events, Executive Committee meetings and to the Head Office in Cambridge, UK when required.

Interviews are planned to take place in December. For successful candidates there will be a first stage and second stage interview. First stage interviews will be conducted online on the mornings of Monday 4th and Thursday 7th December, and second stage interviews will be conducted in-person on Friday 15th December in Cambridge, UK.

Assistant Professor in Regulation of Nutrient Metabolism at McGill University, Canada

The School of Human Nutrition of McGill University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Regulation of Nutrient Metabolism. Top priority research areas include the role of regulation of energy and nutrient homeostasis in prevention and modulation of nutrition-related metabolic disorders, and metabolic and nutritional programming. Areas include but are not limited to the gut-brain axis, genetics, epigenetics, or microbiota as modifiers of disease susceptibility and morbidity.

McGill University is one of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning with 40,000 students, and 1,700 tenure-track professors. Job duties

The successful candidate will teach advanced metabolism including research methodology at the undergraduate and graduate levels and establish and/or maintain an externally funded research program, and develop research collaborations in a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectorial environment at the national and international level. The successful applicant is also expected to participate in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., teaching, graduate student supervision, mentorship, and leadership in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and education requirements

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in nutritional sciences, or related biomedical science such as biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, or physiology, with a strong record of publication in high-quality reputable scholarly journals. Preference given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years postdoctoral research training, and with demonstrated experience in nutrient-mediated interorganelle and intercellular signaling and employing contemporary and integrative research approaches including next-generation sequencing, high-resolution imaging, and development of cell/organoid or transgenic models.
